Scouts Sleepout 2024 for the Northampton Hope Centre

The Big Scout Sleepout took place on the 3rd February 2024 and was aimed at all Scouts & Explorer Scouts. It was open to all groups in Northampton District, and was once again organised by the 46th Northampton (Overstone) Scout Group. Tim May said “We are happy to help the District Team by organising this event as we believe it is an important cause and something that Scouting can and should support in our community, especially at this time of year.”

Following on from previous successful Big Scout Sleepouts, we were again sleeping out at the same time as the Northampton Hope Centre Big Sleepout. The purpose was to raise awareness about the homeless in Northampton and raise funds to support the work of the Hope Centre.

Participants spent the night in the woods at Overstone Scout Campsite & Activity Centre. To keep with the spirit of the event, no tents were used, and Scouts made their ‘bed’ for the night using cardboard boxes, polythene sheets and tarpaulins.

There was support from 8 Groups and the District Explorer Units, with an amazing 110 participants consisting of 90 young people and 20 leaders. After an unseasonably mild, but damp night, they were treated to something hot for breakfast before receiving their well-deserved, 2024 Brass Monkey Pennant.

Tim added “It was great to see so many young people wanting to get involved and supporting such a worthy cause. Amongst the many Skills for Life they develop throughout Scouting, this gives them the opportunity to develop confidence to know that they can make a difference.”

The event has so far raised an amazing £2500 which will go directly to the Northampton Hope Centre, but donations are still coming in.

Donations for the Hope Centre can be made via the following link at Northampton District Scouts Sleep Out Just Giving Page.

The challenge will be topping this next year and we hope to see more groups participating to support this important event.
