Tree Planting at Overstone

Date: 15th Nov 2022 Author: Malcolm Dyer

Following all the sad news over the last couple of years about removing trees in Blackthorn Wood at Overstone it is with a great amount of pleasure that I can inform you all that over the last week the SASU at Overstone along with the help of the 49th Northampton Cub Pack started replanting some trees along with 420 Hedging Plants. The trees and hedging plants that are been planted have either been home grown or donated by the Woodland Trust. The trees and the hedging will provide demarcation of the campsites and activity areas as well providing areas for the local wildlife to thrive. Saplings that have been planted include Grey Willow, Rowan, Silver Birch, Holly, Hawthorn, Sessile Oak and Crab Apple to name a few.

The areas where the replanting has taken place is Crow Campsite and area, we have created near Owl Campsite called Chestnut Copse.

It was a great team effort on Saturday by the 7 volunteers that turned up to carry out the planting and it took them until darkness fell to complete the work. I thank each and every one of them.

It was also good to see the Cubs and Leaders from the 49th get stuck in and get their hands dirty carry out some camp service. Thank you very much. The Young People also put forward some suggestions on what they would like to see at Overstone, and I particularly like the idea of a Bird Hide. I think that will fit in well with the plans we have at Overstone. I will see what can be done.

Although this type of work will not happen overnight, plans are being put in place for the future, we have further trees and hedging that will be planted over the next week by the 43rd Northampton Scout Group and Overstone SASU have received confirmation they will receive another 30 trees and 315 hedging plants in March 2023 from the Woodland Trust.

If you would like to help or get involved at Overstone then please get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.
